| 5 September, 2005 We urgently need animal control officers from all over the state to report in to LACA as soon as possible if they can assist, even for a few days, in the animal rescue efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. The LASPCA workers are exhausted from their efforts in horrific conditions in the afected areas. I have worked extensively with emergency veterinary medicine and have experience with a wide variety of species (lab animals to farm animals to pets). I have had rabies shots (along with hep B and tetanus) and want to help. I am proficient in almost any medical technique and can certainly walk dogs and clean up with the best of them.

Humane Society of United States (www.hsus.org) has an application for volunteers of all kinds. However, they ask for a minnimum 5 day committment. Plus, there is a large list of what you would be responsible for AND some information on what demands on your emotional and physical well being may be.

First hand accounts from Gonzales, LA indicate that rescued dogs are coming in faster than can be cared for. I've also been told of "bags" of dead dogs lying around.
Efforts to reunite most animals with their owners will become futile as most owners are located in another state and without contact info.

Local officials are refusing to allow animals to be brought to outside animal shelters for immediate adoption. This is short-sighted.
Why hasn't a nationwide immediate adoption program been initiated for these animals?

More info from Gonzales:
1. Security in the staging area is extremely lacking. Dogs, especially pit bull puppies, are being stolen.
2. A health agency has threatened to close down camping areas used by volunteers.
3. The National Guard refused to let a vet treat a dying dog at the entrance to the staging area yesterday. The media was brought in to show this.
4. Volunteers are consistently working 12-18 hour days cleaning cages and giving dogs a few minutes of attention each day.
I still argue that these dogs should be transported to outlying local shelters for immediate adoption. Many will otherwise perish while waiting for attempts to locate their out-of-state owners.

If you have not been contacted yet, please don't think we don't appreciate your volunteering and willingness to help. As time goes by there is an ongoing need for people to help; I hope to be able to contact everyone who has volunteered by early next week(by the 20th).
Please be aware that the policies on adoption of animals re being developed as this thing progresses. We need to allow a reasonable amount of time for displaced people to be reunited with their pets, but not too long...for the animals' sake.
