Welcome to the Louisiana Animal Control Association Newsblog!

This blog is meant to supplement our semi-annual newsletter by providing periodic updates on animal control and animal sheltering issues. Anyone interested in animal control and humane law enforcement, animal sheltering, animal rescue, or pets in general is welcome to read our blog. We also offer open membership to anyone who is interested in receiving our semi-annual "hard copy" newsletter (winter and summer issues). Individual dues are just $25 dollars a year. In addition to the newsletters, members receive invitations to attend our continuing education and annual certification academy for animal control personnel, humane officers, animal care workers, shelter volunteers and other persons interested in earning continuing education hours or professional animal service credentials.

We also offer continuing education and certification seminars for Chemical Capture (dart gun certification), Certified Animal Euthanasia Technicians, Nuisance Wildlife Trap and Transfer, and we are planning intensive new courses in Dogfighting Investigation and other issues related to humane law enforcement.

The mission of our organization is to stay on the cutting edge of animal control, humane law enforcement, and animal sheltering both in technology and in humane animal handling techniques.

We also offer polo shirts ($20), t-shirts ($10), vehicle stickers ($2) and caps ($15) for sale to members. Postage and handling is $4 for the first item ordered and $1 for each additional item. We hope soon to offer Powerpoint presentations of our annual academy classes for sale to other agencies around the country, to be offered after each year's academy.

Photos of merchandise will be made available soon.

This will be our introductory blog entry. The next post will cover the National Animal Control Assocation conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 3, 4, and 5 of 2005.

It is 9:00 AM on Thrusday Sept 8th. I was just watching TV Fox news and I am still seeing loose dogs standing on cars in the flood waters. Are you able to be in the flood zone now and are you still trying to rescue these poor animals?
I just need to know there is help out there for them. The dog looked so skinny I feel so bad for it. I am a animal lover and this breaks my heart. I can't help other than give money and I have done that.
Thank you and if you can email me back I would appreciate it.

Hello –

My husband and I love animals. We’ve rescued a few muts and a great dane and 3 cats.

We’ve been looking into finding out how to adopt one of the pets that were abandoned. We could take a dog or cat or maybe both. We’d really like another dog since we are down to just one. We don’t have kids and have a great yard for the dogs so we could help.

I’d even be willing to drive down to save a pet.

We donate signs to the SPCA. Animals are our big love. We’ve offered this to Animals in Distress too. We donate to the HSUS, WWF and a few other agencies. We don’t have much but try to help where we can.

Thanks in advance for any help. It’s wonderful that you are there to help these poor pets. It’s gut renching to watch on the news. I’ll keep looking into other opportunities to help. It kills me to see the poor pets down there. Please let us know what we can do.

We’ll look forward to hearing from you. You can call too – the number is below.

Thanks! Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Diane & David Malesky

I am interrested in information about fostering horses from the hurricane affected areas. My aunt and uncle have room, but not the food for such animals and have fourty years or so experience with them. My e-mail is owen_tanya@hotmail.com. Please put Fostering hurricane horses in the reference line, so I know that it isn't spam.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Tanya Owen

I am a former Animal Control Officer for the Boulder County Sheriff's Office and I would like to assist with the relief and rescue efforts. I also have a friend who is currently an ACO for the sheriff's office who would also like to help. We both have many years experience with animal rescues of companion animals, livestock and even reptiles. We can fly from Denver to Nashville, pick up a van and drive to wherever we are needed. Just let us know where and when. You can reach me, Lori at 303-926-2783 or email me at work at lkilgore@ci.erie.co.us.

Here is Andrew Guthrie in Reston, Virginia. I have a Katrina rescued dog from Louisiana and am trying to expand the search for his owners. He is "Lou" a male, 40 pound Huysky/German Shepherd/Bernese Mountain Dog mix. Two white dots over black face, black top and white and brown on back of legs. He was rescued somewhere in LA and taken to the LASPCA temp shelter at Tylertown, Mississippi. He was brought here to Virginia by Friends of Homeless Animals [FOHA] which has his pix on their website FOHA.org. He is also posted on petfinder.com/disaster/ FOHA is (703) 385-0224. My number is (703) 471-6769. I love him but want him back with his family. He is in much better health now; coat shimmering black and happy. Pass the word. Regards,

Help Your Pet Cope With Stress Caused By Loud Noises:
Which is the noisiest species of all? Nope not the lions, or the elephants, or the geese? it's US HUMANS, our voices were not enough, we started making music and creating musical instruments to help us being louder.
